Bridget Riley: Intervals 3 Series

Bridget Riley's Intervals 3 (2019) is a printed edition of 120 and makes use of straight horizontal lines to become one of her most static compositions. Intervals 3 marks the return of the stripe, a form the artist has used regularly since 1967.

The white of the unprinted paper divides and borders each composition, which consists of five blocks of four-coloured horizontal stripes rendered in mild shades of purple, turquoise, green, and orange. Each segment has alternating sections of harmony and contrast that allude to the flow of music. Riley manipulates the image's speed by altering the colour scheme in each block. The composition has a sense of flawless control and poise.

Born in London, Riley attended Goldsmiths' College from 1949 to 1952 before continuing her education at the Royal College of Art from 1952 to 1955. Riley was able to explore Op Art methods and cultivate her own style when she was employed as an art teacher. The Intervals 3 prints, which are far simpler than many of Riley's Op Art works, encapsulate the artist's belief that, if we look closely enough, complexity may be found behind the surface of simplicity.

Despite being ostensibly abstract, Riley's art has always been the product of a deep fascination with nature and its visual manifestations. Water, soil, air, and plants are all reduced to their most basic forms in these prints. The Intervals series is a stunning representation of an artist at the height of her abilities.
