Bridget Riley: Wall Painting I
Bridget Riley's ‘Wall Painting 1‘ is a screenprint in four colours produced in 2007 and is a pivotal work that bridges Riley’s exploration of optical abstraction with a dynamic immersion. Originally conceived as a large-scale wall painting for Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, it was later adapted into a limited-edition screenprint, offered to collectors.
Installed directly onto the gallery wall, the original Wall Painting 1 spans approximately 2.5 x 5 metres. Riley used a palette of blue, green, beige, and orange, alongside with segments of white wall, to create a composition where the colours and forms vibrate and can extend beyond the confines of a frame. This interplay changed traditional distinctions between art and the walls it is placed on, activating the gallery space to immerse viewers in a rhythmic visual experience.
Wall Painting 1 marked the inception of a series of wall paintings by Riley, a significant change in her practice. By integrating the artwork with the environment, she challenges the viewer's perception, creating a sense of spatial ambiguity.

To celebrate this work, Riley produced a limited edition of 150 screenprints. Each print measures 56 x 91.5 cm and is signed, dated, titled, and numbered by the artist. Published by Artizan Editions, the screenprint captures the essence of the wall painting's dynamic forms and colour interactions on wove paper. The screenprint distills the experience of being in a room surrounded by Riley’s work and allows a broader audience to engage with Riley’s visual rhythms.
