David Hockney: No.468 from A Bigger Book
Regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary art, British artist David Hockney’s artistic journey began in the 1960s when he emerged as a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. His early works featured bright colours, bold shapes, and iconic imagery inspired by popular culture. Hockney has produced work in almost every medium, including full-scale opera set designs, prints, and drawings using technology such as fax machines, laser photocopiers, computers, and more recently, iPhones and iPads.
In 2009, Hockney began using his iPhone to create new drawings, often depicting objects and scenes from his daily life. Following the release of the iPad's in 2010, Hockney's digital landscapes and sketches became more prevalent, eventually inspiring major exhibitions of the artist's work produced only on portable devices. The artist's drawings on his iPhone and iPad are among his most intimate creations; unlike digitised works, which may isolate the viewer from the artist, these pieces are incredibly personal.
