Jean-Michel Basquiat - Art Legend
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. His primitive graffiti style works have been widely known across the art world for over a decade. His famous relationships and collaborations with pop artists Andy Warhol and Keith Haring added to the intrigue of Basquiat’s career. His life and work continues to inspire discussion, influence generations of artists and art in all its forms and make history all around the world.

His paintings proclaimed the existence of more basic truth locked within a given event or thought. As his career unfolded, the young artists applied the same intense scrutiny previously reserved for the world around him to the emotional and spiritual aspects of his own being.

Here at Extraordinary Objects, we have a collection of these works. Many of the dualities suggested in his work evolved out of the recognition of his predicament as a young black man in a white art world. His estate run by his sisters has developed these unique works into multiples by the use of editioned silkscreens to create imagery specifically curated by the artist.
Basquiat throughout his career focused on other suggestive dichotomies, including wealth versus poverty. Integration versus segregation and inner versus outer experience. This examination of key paintings will show how Basquiats handling of such dichotomies came to define his work later in his career. His playful take on childhood superheroes shows his true perspective on what these looked like to him.
