New Exhibition: Out of This World

Introducing our latest exhibition ‘Out of This World’, Extraordinary Object’s autumn show. ‘Out of This World’ celebrates the boundaries of imagination and reality. The exhibition brings together an array of objects from outer space including meteorites, a rare slice of Mars and the largest Lunar rock ever held in our collection alongside well-known artists Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bridget Riley and more. This unique collection showcases a blend of cosmic artefacts and the visionary work of artists whose creations are inspired by the extraordinary.

Lunar Rock

Falling to Earth in 2021, this Lunar Meteorite is the largest piece of the moon Extraordinary Objects has held in our collection so far. Also known as feldspathic melt breccia, the meteorite was discovered in Adjabiya, Libya and dates back approximately 3.8 billion years ago. Weighting an impressive 496 grams, this stunning moon rock measures 7 x 9 x 8.5 cm and is accompanied by a bespoke wooden display stand.

Campo Del Cielo Meteorite

Nearly 4000 years ago, a vast metallic meteorite plummeted to the Earth’s surface forming a 1350 sq kilometre crater. The Campo del Cielo, located in the Chaco region of Argentina, is punctuated by the remains of the impact, with the site originally being called the ‘Valley of the Heavens’ by the indigenous people of Argentina.

Large Fragment 2

Created in 2009, 'Large Fragment 2' shows Riley's ongoing experimentation with colour and shape. The overlapping waves evoke a feeling of harmony and rhythmic movement. One of Riley's most famous optical illusions is created by the piece, which involves the idea of a three-dimensional space opening out in front of the viewer's eyes.

Large Campo Del Cielo Meteorite

A meteorite is formally defined as a solid body of subplanetary mass that either is in space or has come from it and retains its cosmic character. The meteorites of the Campo Del Cielo region have softened edges as a result of terrestrialisation, i.e. smoothing due to the presence of water and aquatic organisms. This process creates beautiful and abstract smoothed objects.

Large Gogotte Formation

Named after the Greek Goddess ‘Athena’, this exceptional gogotte formation is formed of quartz crystals and calcium carbonate and is produced when superheated water extrudes through crevices into a basin of extremely fine white silica sand. The silica then cements the sand together to form the gogotte’s fluid lines, creating natural sculptures. They are found in only one place in the world; Fontainebleau, France.

Mars Slice

Martian meteorites originate from the volcanic regions of Mars where high-altitude areas of the planet are occasionally impacted by passing meteors. Their journey to Earth is only made possible due to Mars's gravity being just one-third that of Earth's, and its atmosphere being 125 times thinner, making it easier for ejected rocks to leave the planet. These rocks then have to survive a journey through interplanetary space. As of September 2020, 277 meteorites had been classified as Martian, 0.5% of the 72,000 meteorites that have been classified.
