New acquisition: The Connor Brothers 'Jesus with Cigar'
‘Jesus with Cigar’ was produced in 2022 and is part of The Connor Brothers ‘Bastardised Oils’ series which sees famous and recognisable works from art history restyled with a uniquely modern twist.
This pigment print with silkscreen is produced on archival paper and framed in a black frame with gold trip as per the artist’s request. Measuring 88 x 66 cm, this print comes from an edition of 30 plus 5 AP’s all of which are signed, dated and numbered by the artists.
Within the bastardised oils series, Van Gogh was reimagined, in his famous self-portrait, with a surgical mask hanging jauntily off his ear; Frida Kahlo was depicted with two Bored Apes on each shoulder; and Jesus Christ holding aloft a Deliveroo bag, as surrounding crowds reach adoringly for him.
The print is a reinterpretation of an earlier work by the artists called ‘The Bestest and Most Expensivist Painting in The History of Art’ which was sold at Sotheby’s Auction House in May 2021 for more than $44,000, smashing its estimate of $10-15,000. This piece holds the record for the most amount paid for a work by The Connor Brothers at auction.
Both ‘Jesus with Cigar’ and ‘The Bestest and Most Expensivist Painting in The History of Art’ are based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ which in 2017 hammered for a staggering $450 million at Christie’s auction house making it the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction.
