New works by Banksy now available

Extraordinary Objects is proud to present its latest acquisition of works by the legendary street artist Banksy. Each piece is taken from Banksy’s series Gross Domestic Product where the artist filled a shopfront in Croydon with a collection of new artworks and announced the surprise venture on social media.

Axe

Axe is a collaboration between Banksy and Escif a Spanish artist known for their clean style of graffiti. The two artists collaborated to create a tongue-in-cheek sculpture that appears almost cartoon-like in its simplicity and wit. At first glance, it looks like a regular axe stuck into a piece of wood. But, upon closer inspection, the viewer sees the axe is growing a flower out of its handle, which, while smooth near the blade, becomes rough and more “natural” towards the handle. Once more, Banksy strikes with his creative genius, as the axe – a tool used to destroy living trees – becomes not only a living tree itself but also a life source…

Banksquiat (Grey)

Banksquiat presents a striking union between two of the biggest names in Street & Urban Art past and present: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy. The monochromatic work depicts a family queuing to board a ferris wheel, the carriages of which are replaced with Basquiat's iconic crown motif. The work is an homage not only to Basquiat but also to the democratic art of graffiti itself, which Banksy sees as threatened by capitalism and consumerism.

Flower Thrower Triptych

Thrower presents a variation of one of Banksy’s most iconic visuals entitled Love Is In The Air (Flower Thrower). The work shows a man with a bandana over his face frozen in the act of throwing neither a brick nor a Molotov cocktail, but a bouquet of flowers. This image conveys a message of peace. The visual is split into three parts, presented as a deconstructed tryptic and framed by the artist in gold frames.

With its classical stencil-led style, the work also pays homage to Banksy’s origins as a street artist, whereby the stencil represents the quickest, most efficient way for the artist to insert his image into the urban environment without getting caught. Revisited and reconceived many times over the years by Banksy, Flower Thrower has become one of the most iconic images from the street art movement and is a motif he revisits often in the same way he does with rats and monkeys.
